Check the claims with consequences first

Do not spend equal time checking every sentence. Start with claims that affect money, deadlines, safety, legal obligations, health, reputation, or another person’s work. A small error in one of those areas can matter more than several awkward sentences.

Return to the primary source

If the answer summarizes a supplied document, open the document. If it names a policy, law, product feature, price, or schedule, check the responsible organization’s current page. A list of links generated by AI is not proof because the link or description may be wrong.

Use uncertainty honestly

Some questions do not have a clean answer. If reliable sources disagree or the information changes quickly, state the date checked, the source used, and what remains uncertain. A careful limitation is more useful than false confidence.

  1. Keep the made-up source open

    All details below are fictional. Treat this notice as the original source for the exercise.

  2. Compare the answer with the source

    Registration closes on 12 October and costs £40. Changes are allowed until 7 October. Use example.org/fast-workshop to register.
    Show the three unsupported details
    • The closing date changed from 10 October to 12 October.
    • The fee changed from £45 to £40.
    • The fast-workshop address does not appear in the source.

  3. Correct only what the source supports

    Registration closes on 10 October and costs £45. Changes are allowed until 7 October. Use example.org/workshop to register.

    Open the original source yourself before using an important date, amount, quotation, or link. An AI answer cannot mark its own claim as confirmed.

  4. Try a small change

    Change the source fee to £50. Rewrite the checked summary and confirm that £45 has disappeared. Leave every other fact unchanged.
