Count work before and after the answer

The response time shown by the tool is not the task time. Include removing private details, preparing context, uploading material, waiting, fact-checking, rewriting, formatting, and transferring the result. Compare that total with doing the task without AI.

Look for repeated failure patterns

A method may still be useful when the same small edit appears each time. It is less useful when the model repeatedly invents reasons, changes important wording, misses exceptions, or produces output that requires line-by-line reconstruction.

  • The required context is longer than the work itself.
  • Errors look plausible and are difficult to spot.
  • The final format breaks when pasted into the destination.
  • You keep rewriting the same sections from scratch.

Give yourself permission to stop

Skipping AI is a competent decision. A short personal message, a sensitive conversation, or a task you can complete accurately in five minutes may not need another system in the middle.

Try it yourself

Run a three-attempt time check

Choose one task you expect to repeat this month.

  1. Write the task and date in your own private note.
  2. Record minutes for preparation, asking AI, checking, fixing, and copying the finished work.
  3. Record the time for the same task without AI.
  4. Write down any errors and choose keep, change, or stop.

Example answer to check

Made-up example: Prepare 2 minutes + ask AI 1 minute + check 4 minutes + fix 3 minutes + copy 2 minutes = 12 minutes with AI. The same task took 15 minutes without AI. Decision: change the instructions and test twice more.

You have finished when you can check these points

  • Did you include review and transfer time?
  • Are important errors becoming easier to catch?
  • Would you keep this method if the tool were not new?

Finish: You have a whole-task total for both methods, a record of errors, and a keep, change, or stop decision.

Try one small change: Use the same private note for two more comparable attempts. Do not count only the quickest result.

Keep these points

  • Measure the whole task.
  • Track repeated errors as well as time.
  • Stop using AI when direct work is better.
